Flag Day
Flag Day in Suffolk County was special this year. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone dedicated a flag that flew over Normandy during the 75 year anniversary celebrations last week. A Suffolk County American Flag that flew over both our National Cemeteries was hand carried by Bellone to Normandy and raised over the American Cemetery during the celebration. It was returned today to the people of Suffolk County to its final resting place.
I was invited to a gathering at Veterans Plaza in Hauppauge NY located on the grounds of our county offices. I was introduced and welcomed by the ceremonial host to a flood of cheers. In the crowd were a dozen men that participated in D-Day and two that scaled the cliffs of Normandy 75 years ago. They were honored for their sacrifice to a standing ovation. These were the true heroes of the day.
